We all know Hawaiʻi is one of the most beautiful places in the country to live, but it is also one of the most dangerous – if you’re a pedestrian. Through mid-November, there have been 36 pedestrian deaths statewide this year, up from 15 last year.

Some Islanders increasingly prefer services like Uber or Lyft instead of traditional taxis, citing lower price as the primary reason. Other consumers still prefer cabs, especially at airports, because of convenience and familiarity. The fact is that ride-hailing companies have staked a claim in an industry long dominated by taxis.

Hotly contested primaries for governor, congress, the state legislature, county councils and mayoral races in two counties have set the stage for the 2018 General Election on November 6. Two days after, INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I will present a recap of the 2018 elections.

Our last INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I before the General Election features two candidate forums:   –At 8:00 pm, it’s the race for U.S. Senate. Mazie Hirono (D) has captured national and local attention with her criticism of President Trump and of his appointee to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh.

This week’s INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI‘I features two candidate forums:   –At 8:00 pm, it’s the race for State House District 36, covering Mililani and Mililani Mauka on O‘ahu.

INSIGHTS features candidates for the At-Large seats for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. This is a statewide race in which six people are vying for three seats. All three incumbents and three challengers advanced through the Primary Election in August to face off in next month’s general election.

This week, INSIGHTS features two Honolulu City Council races:   –At 8:00 pm, Honolulu City Councilman Trevor Ozawa is facing challenger Tommy Waters, as he seeks to keep the seat representing District 4, covering East Honolulu from Hawai‘i Kai to Waikīkī. In 2014, Ozawa beat Waters by just 41 votes.

This week’s INSIGHTS features two Neighbor Island mayoral races:   –At 8:00 pm, it’s the candidates in the race to become the first new Maui County Mayor in eight years. Maui County Council woman Elle Cochran and former councilman Mike Victorino emerged as the top two candidates from an eight-person primary.

Three candidates are trying to unseat our incumbent Democratic Governor on November’s general election ballot. Gov. David Ige declined our invitation to participate in a live candidate forum on INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI; his three opponents accepted.

This week’s INSIGHTS features candidates in the five-way race for U.S. House District 1, covering urban Honolulu to Kapolei and Mililani. Former Congressman Ed Case beat six competitors to win the Democratic nomination, while former state lawmaker Cam Cavasso beat his lone competitor to win the Republican nomination.
