On this special episode of HIKI NŌ—Limitless Aloha: STN in Hawaiʻi—teachers, students and members of the education community tell the story of the first-ever Hawaiʻi-based hub of the annual STN (Student Television Network) conference and competition.

Traditionally, Hawaiʻi students and their teachers travel to other U.S. cities to compete in the conference, which is widely considered to be the Superbowl of student digital media competitions.

This year, due to the pandemic restrictions that prevented student travel to mainland events, media teachers acquired special permission from STN to hold a parallel event in Honolulu with the support of the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education called “Limitless Aloha,” based on the national event’s “Limitless” theme.

The competition was held over three days at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and included breakout session workshops led by HIKI NŌ staff, mentors and other industry professionals.

Most of the students who compete in STN have already gained skills and training through HIKI NŌ, giving them a leg up in competition.

This year Hawaiʻi schools took home a stunning number of awards, 40 in all, which broke an STN award count for island schools.

Taylor McCann, a HIKI NŌ student from Waiākea High School in Hilo, hosts the show on location at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
