On this episode of HIKI NŌ — Hawaiʻi’s New Wave of Storytellers, watch a compilation of some of the most memorable stories from HIKI NŌ’s most recent Spring round of shows, showcasing work from students ranging in grades from 3rd grade to high school.
HIKI NŌ producers selected a wide variety of segments to showcase, including traditional stories, how-to videos and thoughtful Student Reflections.
The show begins with a profile story from the students of Ernest Bowen de Silva Elementary School on Hawaiʻi Island who introduce us to one of their newest Hawaiian Studies teachers, Punawai Rice. The story took home a third-place prize in the HIKI NŌ Spring Challenge Middle School Division.
The students of Sacred Hearts Academy on Oʻahu share a story about one of the newest competitive teams at their school: an all-girls eSports team.
Students at Kapaʻa High School on Kauaʻi share their feature story about a local thrift store that gives back to the community’s homeless. The piece tied for first place in the high school division of the HIKI NŌ Spring Challenge.
Santana Sebastian, a HIKI NŌ student at H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui, shares a profile story about his father and his musical talents.
Sebastian’s H.P. Baldwin High School classmates Mina Suzuki and Kailani Ibanez share their segment about how persistent stress can have consequences on high schoolers.
Students at Kalani High School on Oʻahu offer a tutorial on how to roller skate.
Students Jack Vedder and Lucas Stevens of Kaiser High School on Oʻahu share their short poetic film that conveys how dealing with stress in high school is universal.
Taylor McCann, a senior at Waiākea High School on Hawaiʻi Island shares her post-graduation plans in a thoughtful Student Reflection.
Last but not least, the students at Maui Waena Intermediate School share their story about a community garden on Maui. The story won first place in the HIKI NŌ Spring Challenge Middle School Division.
