In this episode of HIKI NŌ on PBS Hawai‘i hosted by Maya Villanueva, a sophomore at Kalani High School on Oʻahu, and Caleb Crosswell, a freshman at Kalani High School, students explore changes to their community spaces, impending deadlines for a landfill, an elementary schoolʻs robotics club, a school project in support of Maui, and more.  

The first story is a powerful one from students at Kua O Ka Lā Public Charter School on Hawaiʻi Island. They produced a special commentary piece about the latest developments at their hālau, a special place for the community and their school, that could change very soon due to city plans to renovate the property.

On Kauaʻi, students at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School tackle an important issue in a news story covering their island’s only landfill, which is set to fill up by 2026.  

Students at Waiʻalae Elementary Public Charter School on O’ahu contribute a story they produced about the ups and downs of their robotics club journey before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.    

A feature story from students at Highlands Intermediate School on Oʻahu explores a paper links project that symbolizes support and unity for those affected by the devastating fires on Maui in August 2023.

Finally, a student from H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui offers a cinematic Student Reflection about her favorite place and pastime: snowboarding snowy slopes.
