HIKI NŌ Fall Challenge 2020 / HIKI NŌ #1206
This special episode will reveal the winning stories from the high school and middle school divisions of the HIKI NŌ 2020 Fall Challenge competition. This year’s Fall Challenge was entered by 18 student teams from across four islands. Each team was given just four days to create a story based on the following theme: A moment of pure joy that came when least expected. This theme prompted students to explore moments of joy at a time when joy seems to be a rare commodity.
In a non-competitive setting, HIKI NŌ stories generally take about two months to complete and the students are guided every step of the way by their teachers and mentors who are industry professionals. In a HIKI NŌ Challenge, students cannot receive outside help from teachers, mentors or anyone else.
Judges scored the completed entries based on how well the team expressed the given theme, how well they upheld the HIKI NŌ story criteria and, production values.
Besides the first-place winners in the middle and high school divisions, the show will also feature stories that received second, third and honorable mention awards.
This special Fall Challenge show is hosted by HIKI NŌ alumna Monica Schmidt, who graduated from H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui in 2011 and was the co-recipient of the Best News Writing Award at the very first HIKI NŌ Awards. Monica is currently the executive producer of the morning news at FOX5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
HIKI NŌ 2020 Fall Challenge is supported by State Farm®. #1206
