Remember the Boys

Thursday, MAY 1ST at 8:30 PM on PBS Hawaii

Remember the Boys poignantly captures the inspiring, true story of a soldier who served as chaplain to his war buddies. Domingo Los Banos was a teenager when he travelled overseas as a U.S. soldier in WWII along with another 300 recruits from Hawaii. Now in his 80's, Domingo is among the last remaining of the 50 "Hawaii boys" assigned to the U.S. Army's 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment, which General MacArthur deployed in his retaking of the Philippines.

The Hawaii Boys

Born in Hawaii as the son of a Filipino immgrant, Domingo and his siblings grew up on the pineapple plantations of Kauai. After the war, he became a Hawaii educator and school superintendent. Today, as the men's chaplain, it is Domingo who ministers to them and their families as they fall sick, and who eulogizes them when they pass on.

Many of the photos seen in this film were taken with Los Banos' "little brownie" camera that accompanied him to war. To assure that the memory of the "Hawaii boys" is not lost, Domingo Los Banos helped to create a commemorative pictorial book and a documentary film that was shown in national prime time on PBS.

His "boys" are almost all gone, and he is aware his time is to come as well. What inspired him to be a shepherd to his war buddies? What calls him to make sure that they will be remembered? Remember the Boys is a tribute to caring, to the power of friendship, and the cherishing of memories.
