Aloha mai kakou from Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO...
Summer is a season for traveling, but here at PBS Hawaii, you don’t have to
board a plane. Be seated in your own home and watch our new series,
CURIOUS TRAVELER, which has been described as "field trips for grown-ups."
Emmy-winning entertainment journalist Christine Van Blokland brings her passion
and genuine curiosity to explorations of the hidden histories in art, architecture,
museums, monuments and parks. In Curious About...New York City (Sat., June
20, 7:30 pm), Christine visits Grand Central Terminal, Rockefeller Center and St.
Patrick’s Cathedral.
Remember a popular martial arts school that used to operate out of Ward Warehouse
in Honolulu? It belonged to my guest on the next LONG STORY SHORT (Tues., June 16, 7:30 pm). Victor Marx
was a newcomer to the Islands who developed a following with his top skills, comfortable
manner and Louisiana Cajun accent. At the time, as we now learn, he was experiencing
flashbacks from a childhood marred by trauma, much of it from abusive stepfathers.
He had suffered torture and molestation. Marx is proof that one need not stay stuck
in the past. His story of resilience, using discipline learned as a U.S. Marine and
martial artist and by tapping into his faith, is powerful. Today, Marx is based in
California and helps youths and war veterans recover from abuse and trauma.
INDEPENDENT LENS Limited Partnership (Mon., June 15, 10:00 pm) tells the
40-year love story between American Richard Adams (right) and his Australian husband,
Tony Sullivan (left). In 1975, when Richard married Tony in one of the first same-sex
marriages performed in the U.S., they found themselves on the front lines in the
battle for legal immigration status after initiating the first federal lawsuit in
American history seeking equal treatment for same-sex marriage.
GLOBE TREKKER Food Hour (Thurs., June 18, 10:00 pm) visits the Deep
South USA where host Bobby Chinn samples Cajun and Creole cuisine in New
Orleans and the surrounding Bayou country. He meets up with Mary Hoover, known
locally as the “Queen of Fried Chicken.” Then Bobby travels to Mississippi to
visit Elvis Presley’s birthplace in Tupelo, and later learns how to cook the
perfect barbecue pork in Memphis, Tennessee.
GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET (Sat., June 20, 8:00 pm) presents Susan
Stroman’s lavish new staging of Franz Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow,
performed in English. Soprano Renée Fleming (pictured) adds a new character to
her Met repertory as Hanna, the widowed millionairess. Sir Andrew Davis conducts
a stellar cast that includes Nathan Gunn, Alek Shrader, Sir Thomas Allen, and
Broadway star Kelli O’Hara making her Met debut.
Please note: INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII is on a brief summer hiatus. Encore pick of the week:
Over the next 13 Sundays, we’ll bring you an encore of the celebrated drama series
THE FORSYTE SAGA, first broadcast in 2002. Chronicling three generations of
the Forsytes, an upper middle-class family in Victorian and Edwardian England, the
series stars Rupert Graves, Ioan Gruffudd, Damian Lewis, Gina McKee, Amanda Root
and Corin Redgrave. Part 1 of 13 (Sun., June 14, 10:00 pm) introduces the
Forsyte family, which has gathered to celebrate an engagement.
Advance word: NATURE CAT, a new animated series created by two Chicago
brothers and set in a depiction of their childhood backyard, will debut this fall.
It has a “Looney Tunes” look of whimsy. The show’s mission, based on research
showing nature’s benefits to children, is to encourage keiki to leave their digital
devices inside and go outdoors! We’ll have more details for you as we get ready to
launch this program.
