The annual National Geographic Bee returns for the 29th consecutive year. The 2017 Bee features fourth-to-eighth-graders vying for the crown and the top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

Mexican-Americans in CA, TX and across the Southwest create their own distinct musical voices during the second half of the 20th century. Their music would play an important role in the struggle for Chicano civil rights and ultimately propel them from the barrio to the national stage.

 

Divas and Superstars
Explore the Latin Pop explosion of the turn of the century and the success of artists like Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Shakira in the English-language market. As studios concentrate on star-driven Pop, Latino youth gravitate toward urban fusions – Spanish language rap, reggaeton, as well as rock en Español.

Enjoy the contemporary Latin sounds of Natalia Lafourcade and Grupo Fantasma. Mexican superstar Lafourcade performs songs from her Grammy-winning album Hasta la Ruiz and powerhouse Latin funk orchestra Grupo Fantasma dazzle with funky grooves.

The band’s incendiary live show, which NPR describes as “seamless…whenever and wherever they’re on stage,” has brought the band to major festivals and venues as well as two tours to Kuwait and Iraq to entertain U.S. troops. They served as the backing band on several occasions for Prince, who praised them as “real musicians playing real music.”

ACL showcases modern Americana with the Avett Brothers and Nickel Creek. The Avett Brothers perform tunes from their album Magpie and the Dandelion, while Nickel Creek highlights their album A Dotted Line.
