In at the top of our Top Ten South American adventures, Matt Young travels to Guyana, trekking up-river through the rainforest that covers 80 per cent of the country to the dramatic Kaieteur waterfall. With a sheer drop of nearly 250 metres, this rarely visited natural wonder is five times the height of Niagara Falls.

The band’s incendiary live show, which NPR describes as “seamless…whenever and wherever they’re on stage,” has brought the band to major festivals and venues as well as two tours to Kuwait and Iraq to entertain U.S. troops. They served as the backing band on several occasions for Prince, who praised them as “real musicians playing real music.”

 

The Hispanic Heritage Awards

 

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) hosts the 29th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards, the country’s highest tribute to Latinos by Latinos. The program features top Latino performers and personalities paying tribute to the honorees, who this year include Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, author Junot Díaz and actress and singer Angelica Maria, among others.

 

UNITY: The Latin Tribute
to Michael Jackson

 

Drummer and percussionist Sheila E. hosts a concert special that showcases artists performing Latin-infused arrangements of the songs on Tony Succar’s album Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson. The concert, taped in Miami, features live performances of Jackson hits such as “Smooth Criminal,” “I Want You Back” and “Billie Jean.” Among the performers are Jon Secada, Angel Lopez, Michael Stuart, Obie Bermúdez, Jennifer Peña and Kevin Ceballo.
