PBS HAWAI‘I PRESENTS
The Hawaiian Room

The Hawaiian Room, located in the famed Lexington Hotel, was an oasis of Hawaiian culture and entertainment in the heart of New York City. Between 1937 and 1966, hundreds of dancers, singers and musicians from Hawai‘i were recruited to perform at the entertainment venue. In this documentary, filmmaker Ann Marie Kirk shares interviews with over 20 former performers who speak candidly and fondly of their experience at the historic nightclub, and the culture shock of going from Hawai‘i to New York City.

WORLD DANCESPORT GRANDSLAM SERIES
Part 2 Latin Series – The Showdown in Shanghai

The world’s best dancers compete for prestigious titles and prize money. This series covers both the Latin and Standard competitions of the last two regular legs of the series, held in Stuttgart, Germany, and Moscow, Russia respectively, plus the GrandSlam Finals in Shanghai. Dance legend Peter Maxwell hosts the series.

The GrandSlam competition uses a revolutionary judging system where the judges no longer compare one couple with the others on the dance floor. Rather, they focus on each couple individually and award points on an absolute scale for the quality of dancing. Combining athleticism and artistry, the 12 best dance couples perform Latin and Standard styles of dance, from the samba, cha cha cha, rumba and paso doble to the waltz, tango, slow foxtrot and quickstep.
