Rev. Dennis Kamakahi
March 31, 1953 – April 28, 2014

We are saddened to hear of yesterday’s passing of Reverend Dennis Kamakahi, legendary slack key guitarist and friend to the station.

“He haku mele, he Makua, he hoa piha, I ke aloha, he kanaka kūpaianaha, he Hawai’i”
A composer, a parent, a beloved friend, an extraordinary person, a Hawaiian.

PBS Hawaii was honored to have Dennis perform for the very first Nā Mele we produced, with his son David Kamakahi, George Kuo, and Martin Pahinui. He was also featured in Nā Mele with Ledward Kaapana and Cyril Pahinui, Nā Mele: Na Lani Eha from Iolani Palace and Nā Mele: Waimea Ukulele & Slack Key Guitar.

A winner of 3 Grammy Awards and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, Dennis began his musical career in the early 70’s, establishing himself as a premier composer and performer as a member of the Sons of Hawaii. Composing over 500 songs, Dennis was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts and inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 2009. His music was featured in a number of films, including “The Descendants” and “Lilo & Stitch 2.”

In remembrance of Dennis Kamakahi, we wish to share with you his memorable performances on PBS Hawaii, as performed with family and friends.
