CARING FOR YOUR PARENTS
Wednesday, April 2
at 8 PM

As the population ages, many adult children are suddenly faced with an unprecedented social, cultural, economic and personal transition as they assume the primary caregiver role for their aging parents. Produced, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael Kirk, Caring for Your Parents draws much needed attention to this growing national issue.

The first 90-minutes of Caring for Your Parents underscores today's struggle to keep parents at home, tensions between siblings, and the complexity of shifting caregiver roles through an intimate look at five American families.

Immediately following the 90-minute broadcast, former NBC medical correspondent Dr. Art Ulene and eldercare expert Bill Thomas lead "A Conversation About Caring." This half-hour panel discussion offers concrete advice and guidance on how to start the conversation - often the most difficult step in caregiving.

A SPECIAL ISLAND INSIGHTS
"Caring For Your Parents
"

This locally produced follow-up program will address eldercare in Hawaii and inform viewers of valuable local resources designed to help caregivers navigate the unfamiliar process. Need advice from a local eldercare expert? Be sure to call-in during the program.

In conjunction with the broadcast, PBS Hawaii, AARP and the Hawaii Caregiver Coalition have partnered to distribute valuable resources to the public. In March, PBS Hawaii distributed hundreds of informational packets at the Family Caregiver Awareness Day and Resource Fair held at the State Capitol. This month, PBS Hawaii will distribute DVD copies of the local and national broadcast to approximately 50 caregiver groups operating throughout the islands.

Through programming and outreach, PBS Hawaii hopes to ensure that Hawaii's aging population is properly cared for with dignity and respect.
