PBS Hawaii Weekly Newsletter - NOVEMBER 22 - NOVEMBER 28

Aloha mai kakou from Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO...

Here’s wishing you a lovely Thanksgiving, a time for gratitude for what we have. We at PBS Hawaii are always mindful, always grateful, that you support this great endeavor of education through powerful multimedia storytelling. We can’t do it without you. Thank you!

Explore the origins of our country’s Thanksgiving tradition with two history programs on Tuesday, November 24:

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: Pilgrims (image) --At 8:00 pm, brutal truths behind the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World are exposed on AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Pilgrims. Through dramatic re-enactments, director Ric Burns explores the history of our nation’s beginnings in this tale of converging forces. Pictured: Roger Rees as Plymouth Governor William Bradford.

--Then at 10:00 pm, forensic anthropologists excavate the early American colony on SECRETS OF THE DEAD Jamestown’s Dark Winter. What do newly discovered bones reveal about what really happened during the winter of 1609?

It’s always a pleasure to introduce a new NA MELE program! On Monday (Nov. 23, 7:30 pm), enjoy the sounds of a young Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning trio, Hūʻewa, which is committed to the tradition and the evolution of Hawaiian music.

NA MELE: Hūʻewa (image) “‘Hū’ is to hum or to make sound, to make music. And ‘ewa’ is to go off course or to find your own path,” explains Hūʻewa member Kekoa Kane, 25, who performs with 17-year-old Kupu Dalire-Na’auao and 19-year-old Kahi Lum-Young. “That’s what we do with our music…we make music on our own path, on a different style.”

Performances include “Kaulana Niʻihau,” accompanied by the dancers of Hālau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniakea; and a medley of the band members’ favorite songs: “Kaulana Molokaʻi,” “Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua” and “Meleana Ē.”

On break: INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII. The program returns on December 10, with a follow-up discussion on best ways to keep drug offenders from returning to familiar lifestyles and committing more crimes.

INDIAN SUMMERS ON MASTERPIECE: Part 9 of 9 (image) INDIAN SUMMERS ON MASTERPIECE (Sun., Nov. 22, 8:00 pm) comes to an end. On the finale, Madeleine gets a shock, Ramu’s fate is in Ralph’s hands and Aafrin makes two fateful decisions. Pictured: Julie Walters as Cynthia Coffin.
