Aloha mai kakou from Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO...

Honolulu’s McKinley High School is known for a long list of prominent alumni including Duke Kahanamoku, U.S. Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Hiram Fong, Gov. George Ariyoshi, Rev. Abraham Akaka, sculptor Satoru Abe...

LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX guest Benny Rietveld (image) But do you know that the school also produced a top global musician who blazes on bass with guitarist Carlos Santana? Meet Benny Rietveld on LONG STORY SHORT (Tues., Oct. 13, 7:30 pm). Impromptu, in our studio, Benny does a soulful “Waimanalo Blues.” His first experience playing music was at the age of six, in the piano department at Gem’s in Kapalama. “I liked the idea that you could press something, and it creates this…cool sound,” Benny remembers. He was mentored by McKinley’s band director Henry Miyamura, and played in local jazz and rock bands before moving to San Francisco and touring with Sheila E. and Miles Davis. For many years now, he has been on the road with Carlos Santana. And he continues to think of the Islands as home, sitting in with the Oahu musicians with whom he grew up.

The premiere episode of a new season of HIKI NŌ (Thurs., Oct. 15, 7:30 pm) is the first in a series of six shows focusing on a Hawaiian value. The value for this episode is ho‘omau, which means to persevere, perpetuate, or continue.
