PBS Hawaii Weekly Newsletter - AUGUST 2 - AUGUST 8

Aloha mai kakou from Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO...

Hawaii was in a state of pride and glee back in 1987, when the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball team became national champions! Today, a favorite player on that storied team is using the traits she used as an athlete to lead a private school.

LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX welcomes guest Mahina Eleneki Hugo (image) Join me for a conversation with Mahina Eleneki Hugo on LONG STORY SHORT (Tues., Aug. 4, 7:30 pm). Her many years of athletic competition taught her the value of discipline, teamwork and of getting right back up after failure. Now, as Head of School at La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls at Diamond Head, Mahina Eleneki Hugo teaches the same values to new generations of women.

from Serious Mental Illness? (image) People who suffer from mental illness in Hawaii often have difficulty finding and accepting treatment. The next INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII (Thurs., Aug. 6, 8:00 pm) asks, How Can We Better Care for Those Who Suffer from Serious Mental Illness?

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII is a live public affairs show that is also live streamed on PBSHawaii.org. Your questions and comments are welcome via phone, email, or Twitter. JFK and LBJ: A Time for Greatness (image) For many, President Lyndon Baines Johnson is chiefly remembered for escalating the United States military involvement in Vietnam. But 50 years ago, he engineered two of the most important laws Congress ever passed: the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. JFK & LBJ: A Time for Greatness (Tues., Aug. 4, 9:00 pm) examines these events that transformed America.

LIFE ON THE REEF Part 3 of 3 (image) LIFE ON THE REEF (Wed., Aug. 5, 8:00 pm) concludes with Part 3 of 3, as humans and the animal residents of the reef prepare for a Category 5 cyclone that brings destruction to the North Queensland coast of Australia.
