A Capitol Fourth (image) Celebrate our country’s stars ‘n stripes with a PBS tradition: a concert and fireworks, broadcast from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol! It’s A Capitol Fourth (Sat., July 4, 7:30 pm, encore at 9:00 pm).

We’ll kick off America’s 239th birthday with an all-star musical extravaganza that puts viewers front and center at the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. The concert features Barry Manilow, Alabama, KC and the Sunshine Band, Nicole Scherzinger, Hunter Hayes, Lang Lang and others. Actor Bradley Whitford hosts the program.

Four-Four-Two, F Company at War (image) Tune in a half-hour before the pageantry and see the true grit of strength and struggle in a war story that we hold dear. It’s PBS Hawaii’s honor to bring you the film, Four-Four-Two, F Company at War (Sat., July 4, 7:00 pm), about the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, comprised of Americans of Japanese ancestry who fought in Italy and France during World War II against the German Army of Hitler’s Third Reich. This film follows the experiences of F Company through the letters of 1st Sergeant Jack Wakamatsu, whose family had lost their 10-acre truck farm in Venice, California, when they were confined in Manzanar Relocation Center. In interviews, five F Company veterans recall in vivid detail their experiences – from witnessing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor to the Banzai charge up a hill in France where F Company wiped out a German company. The filmmaker is Sgt. Wakamatsu’s son, Peter.
