PBS Hawaii Weekly Newsletter - MAY 31 - JUNE 6

Aloha mai kakou from Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO...

LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX welcomes Mitch D'Olier (image) My guest on the next LONG STORY SHORT (Tues., June 2, 7:30 pm) is Mitch D’Olier, who grew up on Chicago’s South Side and heeded his mother’s advice to make the most of his public education and earn a degree beyond college. Fresh out of law school, he arrived in Hawaii and fell in love with the Islands. Over the years, he led Hawaiian Airlines in tough times, helped guide the development of Kakaako and Kailua, and he has devoted tremendous spare time hours to improving public education in Hawaii.

Victoria Cuba hosts this edition of HIKI NŌ (image) The close of another school year brings a new special edition of HIKI NŌ (Thurs., June 4, 7:30 pm). HIKI NŌ alum Victoria Cuba (pictured) presents some of the school year’s outstanding stories. We met Victoria as a 12th grader, after revealing to astounded HIKI NŌ schoolmates that she’d been homeless off and on for years. Now in college on multiple scholarships, she lives during the school year in a UH Manoa dorm. Victoria has a part-time student tech job here at PBS Hawaii and interns at Hawaii News Now. Still, housing remains a challenge during the summertime.

Other HIKI NŌ schools contributing student stories to this edition: Konawaena High School (Hawaii Island); Kapaa High School (Kauai); Maui Waena Intermediate School (Maui); Ewa Makai Middle School, Mid-Pacific Institute, and Moanalua High School (Oahu).

This program encores Saturday, June 6 at 12:30 pm and Sunday, June 7 at 3:00 pm. You can also view HIKI NŌ episodes on our website, www.pbshawaii.org/hikino.

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII Is 100% Renewable Energy Attainable? (image) The Hawaii State Legislature set a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. Currently we’re on track to meet a previously set goal of 40% renewable energy by 2030. However, we remain the most fossil fuel-dependent state in the nation, with billions of dollars of the State’s economy spent each year on imported fuel. The next INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII (Thurs., June 4, 8:00 pm) asks: Is 100% Renewable Energy Attainable?

INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII is a live public affairs show that is also live streamed on PBSHawaii.org. Your questions and comments are welcome via phone, email, or Twitter. You may also email your questions ahead of time to insights@pbshawaii.org.

Here are other highlights of the week ahead on PBS Hawaii:

FAKE OR FORTUNE? The work of French post-impressionist painter Edouard Vuillard (image) FAKE OR FORTUNE? (Sun., May 31, 10:00 pm) finds the team meeting up with scriptwriter Keith Tutt, who is in love with the work of French post-impressionist painter Edouard Vuillard. When a large oval by the artist appeared in a provincial auction house, Tutt gambled his savings on it, even though it doesn’t appear in the official record of Vuillard’s works. To prove the work is authentic, the team will need to convince some of the most demanding art experts in France.

A CHEF’S LIFE Tomatoes (image) On A CHEF’S LIFE Tomatoes... You Say Heirloom, I Say Old Timey (Wed., June 3, 7:30 pm), Chef Vivian learns the old-fashioned way to can tomatoes. She also prepares a luncheon at the restaurant for food enthusiasts from around the country and plans to serve them the “ultimate tomato sandwich.”

THE TENORS Under One Sky (image) The Tenors – Victor Micallef, Clifton Murray, Remigio Pereira and Fraser Walters – deliver a blend of classical and contemporary pop that developed from their backgrounds: two members are classically trained opera singers and two are from the world of pop and stage music. On Under One Sky (Wed., June 3, 8:00 pm), enjoy their rich, soulful voices as they sing arrangements of beloved songs, including “Lean on Me,” “Besame Mucho” and “You Are So Beautiful.”

Encore pick of the week:

COUNTRY POP LEGENDS Glen Campbell (image) Country Pop Legends (Sat., June 6, 8:00 pm) perform their biggest and most-loved hit recordings from the 50s, 60s and 70s in this special, hosted by country music legend Roy Clark. Performances from Glen Campbell (pictured), Crystal Gayle, Bill Anderson, BJ Thomas, the Bellamy Brothers, and more are featured, along with full-length vintage archival gems from the vaults.
