MR. SELFRIDGE: Season 4, Part 9 of 9 (image) The National Symphony Orchestra and a line-up of singers will be part of a night of remembrance, The National Memorial Day Concert (Sun., May 29, 7:00 pm, encore at 8:30 pm). The program, co-hosted once again by actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, honors the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families and those who gave their lives while serving our country. Among others appearing on stage: retired General Colin Powell, The Beach Boys, Renée Fleming and Alfie Boe.



PACIFIC HEARTBEAT: Splinters - A couple of surfers in Papua New Guinea (image) Questions for President Obama (Wed., June 1, 8:00 pm) features an exclusive interview by Gwen Ifill with the President. This PBS NEWSHOUR SPECIAL also includes a town hall conversation in Elkhart, Indiana about the current election cycle, the economy and America’s role in the world.






INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII: The Honolulu Zoo: A Fall from Grace (image) Growing up in Waimea on the Big Island, Larry Lindsey Kimura often heard his grandmother speaking the Hawaiian language. But even as a child, in a rural setting, he sensed that the language was on the verge of disappearing. On LONG STORY SHORT (Tues., May 31, 7:30 pm), this longtime educator at the University of Hawaii at Hilo traces his commitment to perpetuating the language, as a teacher and developer of innovative programs, including Punana Leo, the Hawaiian language preschools.




PACIFIC HEARTBEAT: Splinters - A couple of surfers in Papua New Guinea (image) Home to 10,000 threatened species and 44 percent of the rare plants in the nation, the Hawaiian Islands are known as the endangered-species capital of the world. What will it take to keep these threatened species from becoming extinct? INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII (Thurs., June 2, 8:00 pm) explores the challenges to safeguard Hawaii’s fragile ecosystems.

Among the speakers: scholar and advocate Jamila Raqib (pictured), actor Adam Driver, journalist Sebastian Junger, author Samantha Nutt and musician Rufus Wainwright.





POV: The Return (image) Afterward, POV (Mon., May 30, 10:00 pm) features a first-of-its-kind PTSD treatment center in California. Of Men and War follows Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families on their paths to recovery, as they attempt to make peace with their pasts, their loved ones and themselves.





GENEALOGY ROADSHOW (Tues., May 31, 8:00 pm) visits Houston to unearth family stories, including whether a black man’s ancestors fought for the Confederacy.


GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING concludes with its final two episodes.

GENIUS BY STEPHEN HAWKING: Where Are We? (image) --What Are We? (Wed., June 1, 9:00 pm) features self-assembling machines and light-up bacteria, which transform the team’s view of life.

--Then on Where Are We? (Wed., June 1, 10:00 pm), the team is challenged with measuring the earth, the solar system and the universe to fi­nd humanity’s true place in the cosmos. Pictured: Volunteers test a Coreolous Effect machine.




SECRETS OF THE DEAD: Teotihuacan's Lost Kings (image) Martha Stewart demonstrates the techniques you’ll need to make Pizza Dough at home. On MARTHA BAKES (Sat., June 4, 4:00 pm), learn how to make a pizza in a skillet, topped with wild mushrooms (pictured), and a sausage and roasted red pepper calzone.






PACIFIC HEARTBEAT: Splinters - A couple of surfers in Papua New Guinea (image) PACIFIC HEARTBEAT (Sat., June 4, 8:00 pm), the nationally distributed series from Pacific Islanders in Communications and PBS Hawaii, concludes with a PBS Hawaii-produced documentary. Dream Big: Nanakuli at The Fringe follows the students of Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Performing Arts Center on Oahu. In 2011, they were granted a rare opportunity to perform at the well-known Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. The experience abroad proves life-changing for the students, who are dealing with adversities at home.
